We all know that dog's make the best travel companion. But let's talk about the many ways we can ensure our dog's are safe in the car. Ultimately, the safety and comfort of our dog's is of the utmost importance.
1. Let's first talk about...Front Seat VS. Back Seat
This is one of the most important things to clarify. As cute as it is being able to have your travel buddy right next to you during the ride, it is very dangerous for your dog to be in the front seat. Here's why, imagine if you were to be in an accident and your passenger airbags were to deploy! Your dog could potentially be killed or severely injured if this was to happen. This is because they are not able to brace themselves the way a human can and their bones are far weaker.
For this reason, it is highly recommended to place your dogs in the back seat or boot of the car.
2. Securing your Dog
It is actually illegal in Australia to drive without your dog being restrained. This is for a number of reasons. If your dog was to be roaming around freely in the back of the car, and you have to break suddenly or the road is very bendy this could cause some serious injuries! An unrestrained dog is also a recipe for the ultimate driver distraction.
A few solutions we suggest would include,
- Adjustable Bungee Dog Seatbelt Headrest Restraint
- Seatbelt leash attachments (these buckle in like a seatbelt and attach to your dogs harness or collar)
- A Waggs & Bone Luxury Travel Beds, these have a built-in leash clip
3. Regular water breaks!
Every time you feel thirsty on that road trip whether its a long road trip or a short (hot) drive back from the beach, it's most likely your dog is thirsty too! They are covered in so much more hair than you and they can't regulate their body temperature as quickly as us humans can. You should always bring a portable travel dog bowl along with some fresh water.
4. NEVER leave them alone in the car
This is serious guys. Sadly as many as 10 dogs per week in Australia die because they are left in a hot car. This is due to heat stroke, which can occur in as little as 15 minutes. Dogs die in hot cars as they overheat very quickly and struggle to cool themselves down, even when a window has been left open and water has been left in the car. Don't do it, not even if you think it's just for 'a few minutes' or if it's an overcast day.
5. Ensure they are comfortable!
Prepare your car for your dog. Our Luxury Travel Bed will simultaneously protect your car and add comfort for your dog. If you find yourself frequently traveling with your dog, you may want to invest in one.
